I enjoyed the 2015 BET Awards hosted by Antony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross of Black-ish. Some of the standout performances for me were Smokey Robinson who delivered some much-needed wisdom to the young entertainers, Diddy and the Bad Boy reunion, Pattie Labelle, Anthony Hamilton, and Chris Brown.
Rihanna and most of the audience appeared mesmerized by the words and songs of Smokey Robinson who received the Lifetime Achievement Award, but when he started ‘Tears of a Clown,” Ray J acted as though the song was written for him. I guess it’s safe to say; he can relate huh?
But Rihanna let Stephen Hill Know who’s the boss when he tried to persuade her backstage to throw a stack of money out before introducing her new video. Rihanna argued a bit before throwing the money back into a shocked Stephen Hill’s face. Wonder how that will impact her relations with BET? She obviously doesn’t care but used her better judgment against what would have been a lame stunt.
K. Michelle and Tamar Braxton squashed their beef but was overshadowed by the legendary Pattie Labelle who joined them in song. Pattie’s voice hasn’t changed; wonder what she’s done to preserve it unlike other greats?
The Bad Boy reunion featured Mase, 112, Faith Evans, French Montana, Lil Kim and Biggie via hologram. Diddy later announced plans for a worldwide tour in celebration of the labels’ twenty-year anniversary. Times flies, right?
Anthony Hamilton’s tribute to those we’ve lost was beautiful.
Chris Brown performed with just about everyone it seemed. That should tell him to focus on the music and leave the foolishness alone. The guy is super-talented but still has some maturing to do.
Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill appeared very happy making their love official and performed their new single along with Chris Brown.
Tom Joyner received the Humanitarian Award. His foundation has donated more than $65 million in scholarships to HBCU’s.
Janet Jackson was the recipient of the Ultimate Icon award. The audience seemed surprise like me to see her actually walk-out. She looked confident and stunning! The tribute was performed by Tinashe, Jason Derulo and Ciara and all were just okay.
Jussie Smollet, Yazz and Serayah performed a medley of songs from the ‘Empire’ soundtrack. They were all great but I must say, Yazz seemed most comfortable on stage.
Diddy forgot the stage floor opened for Lil Kim and took a fall during his performance. You can see the clip here:
But like a true professional, he laughed at himself and posted the video reminding us all to just get back up.
All in all another great year of performances at the 2015 BET Awards.
