Beverly Bond, founder of Black Girls Rock should be commended for her thoughtful work. She responded to the recent controversy surrounding the name (Black Girls Rock), in the most eloquent way saying, “The cultural, intellectual and social contributions made by women across the African Diaspora are a part of human history and should be valuable to all people.”
Okay, we have the audacity to affirm “Black Girls Rock,” yet in doing so we’ve giving our detractors a great deflector. There’s power in knowing the package is sometimes just as important as its content.
As a proud Black woman, I must admit being uncomfortable with the title name“Black Girls Rock.” Yes, I agree, some of us rock and so do “some” Asian girls, Latino girls, Caucasian girls and so on. (more…)

The perception of being overweight has shifted across the globe. When asked, a whopping 80% of parents said their overweight child was of normal weight according to a recent study that also found this problem more prevalent in homes of lower socio-economic status especially those of south Asian and African-American decent. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar says even though he made the choice to convert to Islam more than 40-years ago, he’s still defending that choice. Like President Obama and many others, he had a hard time accepting the use of Christianity to justice such outrageous behavior as slavery and says, “One world does not have to mean one religion, just one belief in living in peace.” The article is lengthy but a very good read.
Destiny’s Child reunited at the 2015 Stellar Awards in Vegas. The ladies performed two songs, ‘Alpha and Omega’ and Michelle’s ‘Say Yes.’ From the clip, they were perfectly synced and must have rehearsed quite a bit considering they last performed together in 2013 during Beyoncé’s Super Bowl performance.
