BET had its annual upfront today in New York announcing its first ever mini series, The Book of Negroes aka Someone Knows My Name, based on the Commonwealth Prize Novel by Lawrence Hill.

The six-part mini series stars: Cuba Gooding Jr, Lou Gossett Jr and Aunjanue Ellis.

It tells the story of Aminita Diallo, who was abducted at age 11 from her village in West Africa and sent to live as a slave in South Carolina. The story follows her capture and her enslavement in America, eventually ending with her emancipation in England. BET is producing in partnership with eOne and The CBC.

In case you haven’t picked it up, the book is an excellent read so I’m excited to see this.

Also, ‘The Game’ will return for its eight season, ‘The Real Husbands of Hollywood’ for its third, ‘Being Mary Jane’ for its second season and the old-staple-‘106 & Park’.

A new scripted series, ‘The Start Up’ was also announced, starring Diggy Simmons.  The series will explore what it means to be young, gifted and digital as Blake and his friends strategize for fame and financing while navigating the freedoms of adulthood.
