We can’t say for sure what’s going on in Beyoncé and Jay Z’s marriage but she totally sold the “I’m a victim of infidelity” narrative in her latest release, ‘Lemonade.’
This has for certain increased her “relatability” factor by the dozens, but who is this person or couple who by all appearances, seem to be in a happy and balanced relationship yet releases music so dark and distant from the image we see day-to-day.
The HBO special was split into themes – beginning with Intuition, Denial, Anger, Apathy, Emptiness – but ended with ones including Forgiveness, Hope and Redemption, suggesting the pair have overcome the troubles in their marriage.
Later, the couple appear together as she sings: ‘Baptize me. Now that reconciliation is possible, if we’re gonna heal, let it be glorious.’
But earlier, Beyonce is seen sitting at a piano alone, with flashback scenes of her wedding to Jay Z in 2008, and them lying in bed together.
‘My daddy warned me about men like you,’ she sings. ‘Cause every promise, don’t work out that way. Nothing seems to hurt like the smile on your face.’
She also opens a track with some evocative spoken word – alluding to the cheating.
‘So what are you gonna say at my funeral now that you’ve killed me? Here lies the body of the love of my life whose heart I broke without a gun to my head.
‘Here lies the mother of my children both living and dead. Rest in peace my true love, who I took for granted.’
She adds: ‘Her heaven will be a love without betrayal. Ashes to ashes, dust to side chicks.’
‘Are you cheating on me?’ Beyonce asks at one point, before she is seen smashing up cars with a baseball bat with references to being ‘jealous’ and ‘crazy.’
Was she channeling the emotions of her mom who we know survived a tumultuous marriage to her father Matthew, who by the way fathered two outside children while still married to Tina, Beyonce’s mom or could she be speaking from personal experiences.
We’ve all heard the incessant rumors of Jay Z cheating so that wouldn’t be far-fetched. Whatever it is; she has once again masterfully conveyed a message of resilience through it all showcasing pivotal figures in the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement like the mothers of slain teen, Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown.
It seems our super-stars are often riddled with pain and perhaps that’s what make them great.
Nonetheless, she has indeed turned her life-lemons into lemonade as this is an outstanding piece of work. Kudos to Beyoncé for a job well done!
