Oprah Winfrey and Alan Ball have joined forces to bring “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” to HBO.
Henrietta Lacks was her name but scientists know her as HeLa.
She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells were taken without her knowledge in 1951. They would later become one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization, and yet most of us have never heard of her.
Thank you Oprah for bringing this extraordinary woman’s life story to light.
