“Everybody take a deep breath! #HopeLives!” she tweeted about the president-elect’s meeting with Obama, to the dismay of some of her followers, who slammed her for being sympathetic towards Trump.
Speaking after a special screening of 13th, the new documentary from her Queen Sugar collaborator, Ava DuVernay, Winfrey clarified her tweet’s meaning, apologizing to anyone she offended.
“I couldn’t breathe after the election…I was expecting tension, awkwardness, and strain,” Winfrey said, according to EW. “So when I saw them sitting together, I actually took a picture of the screen that said ‘President-elect Trump honored to meet Obama.’ And President Obama was being so gracious, and I heard Donald Trump say, ‘He’s a good man.’ I heard Donald Trump say, ‘I’m going to be seeking his counsel.’ I literally went [deep breath], I can breathe now,” Winfrey said.
“So what I should have said was, ‘I just took a breath,” she continued, apologizing for her tweet’s language, and explaining she should have maybe used the hashtag #CivilityLives, “because this was more civil than I expected it to be.”
Oprah was a vocal supporter of Hillary Clinton during the election. “I’m with her,” she told Entertainment Tonight in June. “I really believe that is going to happen. America, it’s about time that we make that decision.” Source
It’s safe to say, Oprah was just as surprised and relieved by President Obama’s display of Jesus tendencies at the first meeting with president-elect as the rest of us. Glad she took time to further explain her position although people made more of this than need be.
