Powerful women: Oprah Winfrey and Cicely Tyson took a moment to pose with author Maya Angelou on her 86th birthday on the weekend as her portrait was unveiled at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC

Oprah Winfrey, Cicely Tyson and friends came together in celebration of Dr. Maya Angelou’s 86th birthday, and unveiling of her portrait at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC on Saturday.

Oprah looked radiant in a black turtleneck dress as she supported Dr. Angelou on this special day.

She was surrounded by the likes of Johnetta Cole (former President of Spellman College), Kim Sajet (Director, National Portrait Art Museum) and other prominent women who all joined in to celebrate this momentous occasion. 

The “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” author beamed with joy as her body of work was extolled.

Oprah spoke at the event and reminded the audience of Dr. Angelou’s famous words of wisdom such as. “Don’t get older just to get wiser.”  And said, “If you get older, you will be wiser,” saying, “I believe that – if you dare. But get older because it’s fun!”
