Retired, renowned neurosurgeon, and current Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Dr. Ben Carson has come under fire after referring to slaves as “immigrants.”

“That’s what America is about, a land of dreams and opportunity,” Carson said. “There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less. But they too had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, great-grandsons, great-granddaughters, might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land.”

The remark is offensive for obvious reasons….the word immigrant is understood or implies a voluntary action but if you listen to his speech in its entirety; it just may have been a cleaver play on words.

Sure, our ancestors were brought here as slaves and tortured for hundreds of years but we’re here now and should be treated fairly and afforded the same rights as every other American. (I mentioned this in a previous post last week on IG)

James Baldwin said it best, “History is always present,” so the slave narrative for me is rather trite.

Yes, “some” of our ancestors were slaves; however, we also come from Kings and Queens so why not switch focus to that rather than the misfortunes of our people?

It’s about changing the psychology….think of yourself as an immigrant rather than an indigent and perhaps you and others will have greater expectations.

He went on to say, everyone deserves to be treated fairly and said if that were to happen there would be less need for government intervention.

I agree with that!

Most of us have had unfair experiences in the work place and he too must understand this.

The idea is to empower us to first see ourselves as deserving and second teach others as well…treat me fairly and I will forge my own way which goes against the stereotype that Blacks sit around waiting for handouts.

Not!  What we want and deserve is equity.
