Mickalene Thomas is a contemporary African-American artist from Camden, New Jersey. She is best known for her complex paintings made of rhinestones, acrylic and enamel.
Her work was featured on last week’s episode of the Fox hit drama “Empire” along with actress and fellow Camden star Tasha Smith.
Thomas was recently named a United States Artists Francie Bishop Good & David Horvitz Fellow, recognizing her as one of America’s most accomplished and innovative artists.
The “United States Artists (USA),” represent eight creative disciplines and recognize the value individual artists contribute to American society. Each year Fellow recipients are awarded an unrestricted $50,000 cash prize.
Her work explores ideas of femininity, beauty, race and sexuality. You can learn more about her collection here and view some of her pieces at Art Basel Miami currently on display at the Kavi Gupta booth-E15 today.
We salute and wish Mickalene Thomas continued success!
