Moissanite is a gemstone that was discovered by accident in 1893. The French researcher Henri Moissan, who later received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, discovered microscopic particles in the crater of a meteorite that fell on Earth. At first, he thought he had discovered diamonds. A few years later, however, he concluded that the crystals he had discovered had a different composition. Moissanite, as discovered by Henri Moissan, is similar to a diamond in many ways. The difference is that a diamond is made of hard-pressed carbon and sustainable diamond rings is made of so-called silicon carbide. Natural moissanite is extremely rare and therefore almost all are made in the laboratory.

The hardness of all gemstones is determined with the help of the Mohs’ hardness scale, which shows the resistance of a gemstone to scratches. Moissanite has a very high value of 9.25 on this scale. This means that moissanite is very resistant and very hard in its shape. However, a diamond that has a value of 10 on the scale is almost four times harder than moissanite. You can wear a moissanite every day without any problems and therefore fits very well into an engagement ring, for example. However, you have to keep an eye on moissanite from time to time, as it is softer compared to a diamond the hardest mineral in the world.

As far as we know today, diamond is the hardest mineral and therefore has a value of 10 on the Mohs’ hardness scale. So it is an incredibly robust gemstone and can be worn wonderfully in everyday life. A diamond is almost four times harder than moissanite, although it may sound like there isn’t that much of a difference between 9.25 and 10 on the scale.

A diamond has a natural colour and if it is assessed as colourless, it does not have any other colour tones. This means that it appears colder and more colourless compared to moissanite, but this is usually perceived as positive.

The price of a diamond is higher, which is because diamonds are checked according to significantly more criteria, such as shape, carat, cut quality, colour and clarity. In addition, a diamond is more difficult to make than moissanite. Natural diamonds have a higher price because they are a work of art made of the forces of nature. The unique manufacturing process that a real diamond goes through beats other gemstones, such as moissanite, by a long way.
